Booklist Review of Get Outdoors

The Get Outdoors series encourages early readers to venture outside and enjoy the beauty of nature through various outdoor activities. Each title introduces the activity, details the necessary gear, advises on proper technique, warns of potential risks, and explains how to stay safe and have fun. Sections are set onto colorful double page spreads, which include one or two short paragraphs along with informational text boxes, full-color photography, and word-bubble commentary from Rory the Raccoon, who serves as the guide for each volume. Camping walks readers through spending the night outdoors, covering the most important equipment, how to set up camp, and how to be safe from fires and wildlife. Climbing introduces both rock climbing and bouldering, defining the lingo and techniques needed to participate. Hiking discusses how to be prepared for these walks, enjoy the experience, and respect nature along the way. Paddling provides a crash course in using kayaks, canoes, and rafts. All four titles complement one another well, with the given information rarely crossing over and the author going into a surprising level of detail, all while maintaining a tight, easy-reader flow. A glossary and index round things out in this inviting and encouraging intriduction to adventuring outdoors.
